Dental Inlays & Onlays Colorado Springs
In the cosmetic dentistry world some of the more commonly used methods to go about fixing a cracked or decaying tooth include using either composite fillings, a dental crown or even by replacing the tooth with a dental implant from a Colorado Springs dentist. However in some cases, placing just a filling in the tooth will not give enough protection to the tooth. Even though composite resin fillings are meant to be durable and long-lasting, when put on a back tooth they can break down over time. This is because the back teeth are what we use to chew and they support a large portion of the biting pressure.
The answer to protecting an injured back tooth is the use of dental inlays and onlays. The method used will depend on the amount and position of the decay. If you require dental inlays and onlays from a Colorado Springs cosmetic dentist, be sure to come to Dr. Hall.
Porcelain Inlays
Dental inlays are made from a tooth colored porcelain just like our single visit dental crowns created for dental implants with CEREC 3D technology and are used as an alternative to silver or composite fillings. Inlays can be used to repair a damaged tooth but require less removal of the tooth structure than a traditional crown.
Dental Inlays can be used to repair the following:
- Decayed teeth
- Large Fillings
- Broken Fillings
-
Broken or fractured teeth.
Dental inlays can also be used to improve the appearance of large fillings made with traditional silver material.
Porcelain Onlays
A dental onlay is very similar to a dental inlay. The primary difference between the two is that the onlay will replace one or more of the chewing cusps on the tooth. Dental onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns.
What is involved in getting a dental inlay or onlay?
Two appointments are needed for an inlay or onlay procedure. In the initial appointment Dr. Hall will take an impression of the tooth and prepare it for the new dental onlay by removing any decay or old filling material. The tooth is then cleaned and shaped for the proper fit of the onlay.
On your second visit, Dr. Hall will bond the new dental inlay or onlay to your tooth and make adjustments for proper bite and comfort.
